Part of the plans for my birthday weekend at Road America, was for my buddy and I to ride our scooters to downtown Elkhart Lake tonight. We’ve spent weeks trying to figure out the logistics of how to do this. The best plan we had come up with was to load the scooters onto the trailer, move the truck to somewhere nearby outside the track, then unload the scooters and ride into town.
After the last race we stayed to watch a live episode of The Marshall Pruett Podcast, and we were about to enact the plan, when another friend suggested we ask if we can leave the truck at the track for a couple hours and come back. Figuring it couldn’t hurt to ask, we went to the gate 4, the one nearest my truck. We were told this would be fine, but that particular gate would close at 8:00. They suggested we ask the staff at gate 6, which was open 24 hours.
So we rode over to gate 6 and told them we had a question. The staff member waved us past and around the gate, so we could get out of the flow of traffic. We then asked if it would be ok if we ride our scooters to downtown Elkhart Lake, and came back.
A very angry supervisor came over and said not only could we not do that, but since we had riden past the gate (which the staff member had waved us past and around when we stopped to ask a question!), we could not go back inside to get our truck. We were fine not being allowed to leave and come back, but we thought she was joking about not being able to get my truck. We thanked them and started back in to load the scooters on the trailer and leave, when she stopped us and said that we really could not go inside, because we had already left.
We were pulled aside. A security guard came over a few minutes later and told us to lead him back to the truck and start loading. He was going to watch us, and if we weren’t gone in 30 minutes, he would have us arrested for trespassing.
We pulled out 15 minutes after getting back to the truck. My friend feels it was simply comically rediculous, which it was. I, however, am seething with rage. If I wasn’t other people’s ride home, I would be on my way home right now. I don’t even want to watch the IndyCar race tomorrow, or ever go back to Road America again.

Sounds like some power hungry employee needs a few lessons in proper customer relations. Any chance you can call them out for it on social media, or get a hold of someone higher up the food chain and Lodge a complaint there?

As a rule of thumb, I generally ignore security guards and if a security guard ever tries to “detain” me, I will leave.

I generally do to, but I needed to get back on the property to get my truck.

I’d go that route too. Honestly I’ve had nothing but good experiences there, so it sounds like some staff needs an adjustment.

Should have got them on camera, then let the internets deal with it.

Shit - that sucks. I’m with BaconSandwich - sounds like a couple of dumbasses on a power trip that need a slap. Hopefully reaching out to RA or using social media will fix that - good luck!

I needed my truck back, so I had to swallow my rage in the moment and comply.

And of course, hindsight is 20/20. Good that you didn’t pop him one, I suppose.

We salvaged a decent weekend out of it, but this incident through a significant wet towel over it all. It completely fugged up Saturday night.

a few years before he died Evel Kneival made an appearance at a bike show and would be signing autographs. we showed up and found out he wouldn’t be doing his thing for another 5 hours after we had paid and gone in, and that there were no in and outs, once we left we would have to pay again to see him, ok, we weren’t going to hang that long so we made our rounds, left and had dinner and paid to get in again, this was $10 or more a head so we are looking at $60 or more, no prob. we went straight over and got in line. here comes a guy walking down the line and cuts off the line several people in front of us saying they didn’t have enough time for the whole line to go see him. bullcrap. I told the guy I wanted to see whoe ver was in charge. I told him my story and told him he needs to put me back in line or refund my money or theres going to be trouble. he walked me down to the stage and put me next in line and I thought I was going have to fight the guy behind me but I told him what happened and he spared me.
OIIIIIIIO Everything's better when wet. Just ask Steve.

Dude, look at it like this. You were mad. They weren’t. Who had the wet towel weekend? You, not them. So ya have to look at it like - “I am NOT going to let other peoples actions make ME feel shitty. .. that is just letting THEM control ME...
I know. Easier said than done. But it helps ME be a LOT h appier a LOT more often.

I would give the most credit to the gate person who was just trying to be helpful.
The security guard is probably stuck in the middle, he knows nothing other than he was called by a supervisor and told you are to be escorted out of there. Heavy handed maybe but he has a job to do.
A circle in hell is reserved for the supervisor, who represents management and made a steaming pile out of the whole thing to end your day with. That is the person who should be made to squirm.
I recommend that RA send some of their folks to Mid Ohio and see how how to properly host guests. I’ve seen nothing but smiles from MO’s people, which always makes the weekend go better.
The track charges $100+ for the weekend? If RA wants attendees, they need to make it fun. Another opportunity lost for RA.
